Introduction to Tra Que Vegetable Village

Tra Que Vegetable Village is a well-known attraction in Hoi An, located in Cam Ha Commune, about 3 km northwest of Hoi An’s center. This traditional vegetable farming village has a history of over 300 years and is renowned for its fresh herbs and leafy greens.

The village was established in the 18th century, originally specializing in growing aromatic herbs, including “Nhu Que”—a unique herb with a fragrance similar to cinnamon. In the 19th century, Emperor Gia Long visited the area and was impressed by the distinctive taste of the local produce, thus naming it “Tra Que,” a name that has been preserved to this day.

What makes Tra Que Vegetable Village special is its organic farming techniques. Farmers here do not use chemical fertilizers; instead, they enrich the soil with seaweed from the Co Co River, ensuring that the vegetables remain fresh, flavorful, and naturally organic. Thanks to this sustainable farming method, Tra Que’s vegetables are recognized as exceptionally clean and safe for consumption.

Beyond being a historic farming village, Tra Que has become a popular eco-tourism destination. Visitors can participate in hands-on farming experiences, take cooking classes using freshly harvested ingredients, or join local festivals such as the Cau Bong Festival, which takes place on the 7th day of the first lunar month to pray for a prosperous harvest.

On April 4, 2022, Tra Que Vegetable Village was officially recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, highlighting its cultural significance and growing appeal in Vietnam’s tourism landscape.
