Overview of the architecture of Tan Ky ancient house

Tan Ky ancient house is the intersection of three major regional cultures. It attracts not only with its centuries-old age but also with the delicate combination of architectural elements bearing Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese influences.

  • Japanese architectural style: Clearly reflected in the wooden frame of the house, which uses nail-free joinery techniques, especially in the central beam and column system. The skylight in the middle of the house creates ventilation in line with Japan’s signature minimalist spirit.
  • Chinese architectural style: Found in the lacquered and gilded horizontal boards and parallel sentences, as well as the solemn ancestral altar at the back of the house. Intricately carved dragon and phoenix motifs strongly reflect Chinese artistic influence.
  • Vietnamese architectural style: Evident in the yin-yang tiled roof, Bat Trang brick flooring, and the high threshold at the main entrance. The layout of rooms from front to back reflects the traditional Vietnamese tube house style.
